How much money have you spent on ONE Magic card?

I haven’t spent much one a single card. Overall I only own about 300 Magic cards. I own all the 8th Edition starter decks, 2 Mirrodon Theme decks, and about 5 random Magic boosters. Even with my small collection, I have all the land I will ever need.

The most I’ve spend on one card is probably about 2 dollars for Vedalken Shackles. It was a Fifth Dawn artifact that cost 3 but had the ability “2, tap: Gain control of target creature with power less than or equal to the number of Islands you control as long as Vedalken Shackles remains tapped.” I bought this the very first day it was released online and the card when up and up in value.

So how much have you spent for a card?

  1. Quite a few years ago, I spent $7.50 on a Shivan Dragon. I mainly bought it because I like dragons, less because I wanted to actually use it in a deck.

  2. I spend 10-20% of my annual income on MtG.

...but I'm a alienated ascetic hermit (aka: homeless beach bum) and have an income of roughly $200 a year, depending on how much cash I find on the ground; I spend $20-$40 on cards every year and then I give the cards away a few weeks later when I realize I have no friends to play with, or much in the way of friends in general for that matter.

This year I got an Orzov Guildmage for 50 cents. I love the gothic style artwork. :)

  3. Well, I've explicitly bought a number of cards. Over the course of a few orders, I bought at least one each of the current core-set duals, though they're all well-played old-style versions, and only paid about 4 bucks each for them. The most outrageous price I've paid, is probably Imperious Perfect, at 3 bucks each for a freaking uncommon, that the shop had over 200 in stock, so it wasn't a direct supply/demand driven price. But I only needed a couple to make the playset in my T2 Elf-ball deck (which is essentially my favorite deck in Forge, but I can play kodama's reach).

I can't imagine only owning so few cards. Once I was bitten by this bug, I threw a pack or two into the shopping cart everytime I'm at Target or Walmart. Magic came out while I was in high school, and there were a number of my friends in the SciFi club playing it. I didn't think it was going to last long.... I held out on the game until Mirrodin, when one of my current friends got back into it after a 4 year absence.

  4. I have never bought an individual card. So, the most I've ever paid for a single card is $4 (retail for 1 booster pack) / 15 cards = 26.7 cents.

  6. I spent $50 on a pretty worn Beta Ancestral Recall about 10 years ago or so. Last time I went to look for it I couldn't find it, though. :^(

  7. Back when affinity had run rampant I spent 75 on 4 Ravagers...

    I am a collector, so I won't mention how much I spend :p

I do have a large collection of kird apes for some reason..

  8. I haven't bought many "individual" cards. I used to buy booster packs, and then trade cards in order to get the ones I wanted.

However I remember, several years ago, I went out of my way once, and bought a bunch of cards from a guy : 4 Serendib Efreets (Revised edition, with the wrong color and picture) and a Word of Command (Unlimited edition) for a decent price (don't remember how much exactly, unfortunately. Between 15 and 25€..)

I still have those cards. <3

  9. $400 for a NM Unlimited Mox Sapphire. Slightly less on the rest of the moxen. $600 for a sealed box of revised. Probably nearly 100 boxes of T2 for drafting purposes, though I probably only opened about 1/4-1/12 of the packs therein. I'd estimate my life spendings on MTG to be in the neighborhood of $5,000-$10,000. I don't regret a cent of that, as I've made many friends and have playsets + of all the legacy staples. I have 56 duals, working on 60 (playsets for decks, 10 for each of my cubes)
