Beta Version

I posted a new beta version of MTG Forge here. Hopefully it doesn't have any major bugs, but if it does just leave a comment. Over 100 new cards were added pumping the total up to a total of 849 cards.

The "download card pictures" option should work and I love the new layout that Nantuko submitted, it makes MTG Forge look better. (Instead of showing colored boxes for the cards, the card images are scaled down and shown.) Also thanks to another reader that sent me the code to make rotating images faster. Thanks to Rob Cashwalker for submitting 50 or so cards also.

  1. 849 cards O.o;
Are most of these creatures ? If not, How does your AI react with the new cards ?
If yes, doesn't this bring a problem of balance in the game ? (too many creatures VS spells ?)

by the way, I released an alpha of my own game, for those around here who own a psp :)

  3. Another release :D Coolness. 849 cards might seem like a lot but its a drop in the bucket of the # of unique cards printed by wotc.

Re: creatures vs Spells...you do know you can edit the commons/uncommons/rares text files to pair down the cards that show up in Sealed and Drafts? Im not so thrilled with having to reedit these files yet again :D but its better than being at the mercy of the choices of others...the AI doesnt stand a chance against me if I dont edit out the really bad cards. With the current sets I do use the AI actually wins occasionally. (1 in 15 games usually.) Which means Im probably rustier than an old nail but :D Shandalar couldn't win at all.

Willow if I had a PSP Id get a copy of your alpha but since I dont :/ Well good luck with that.

  4. I submitted 18 global pump spells similar to Tromp the Domains and Overrun. I had wanted to play overrun in the elf deck, but all we had was Tromp, so I added all the cards that have similar effects.

I also submitted 100 creatures with self-pumping, whether it was purely p/t boosts or purely adding an ability like flying or combination of both, the code I submitted handled it all, and was a total of 420 lines of code. But it turns out that forge had already worked on a keyword parser for simple positive self-pumping.

Here's my "to-do" list of submissions: (Example Card)
Single Target Pump Spells (Giant Growth)
Single Target Pump Creatures (Kabuto Moth)
Single Target Damage Creatures (Prodigal Sorcerer)
    Single Target Bounce Spells (Boomerang)
    Self Regenerate Creatures
Comes-Into-Play Gain Life Creatures (Venerable Monk)
Comes-Into-Play Deal Damage Creatures (Flametongue Kavu)
Comes-Into-Play Draw Card Creatures (Merchant of Secrets)
    Comes-Into-Play Discard Creatures (Ravenous Rats)
Comes-Into-Play Return From Graveyard Creatures (Eternal Witness)
    Self Draw Spells (Concentrate)
    Target Draw Spells (Ancestral Recall)
    Global Bounce Spells (Evacuation)

  5. http://outofthebrokensky.com/images/tortuga.jpg

got interested in seeing ALL the images in the deckeditor once I started so I made this in PSP (paint shop pro). Hope it suits...note that the art and background is from an island both of which could be changed if desired.

  6. I rendered Tortuga in Magic Set Editor. I may not be a programmer, but anything I can do to participate in this great project, I will.

  12. Oops... scaling...

I'll render it tomorrow, and I'll compare it with the sizes of the existing cards before posting

  13. Btw Slyph, the reason I bothered making art for Tortuga is that I don't know if there are issues with using WOTC owned art personally but Im pretty sure it cant distributed with a program like mtg forge whereas personal art like what I drew is perfectly ok. (I agreed to its use by posting it up here.)

  14. The AI has found a fun use for Lignify because of a bug :D (darned exploiter) Instead of just reducing the base power/toughness to 0/4 it hits the total so that if the creature has taken 4 damage that turn it dies! *sorcery speed kill card* :) the bug being that it should not kill anything if the base toughness of 4 + any modifiers is higher than the damage taken :)

  15. Hello, I just found MTG Forge and all I have to say is WOW!!!

Quick question though...I still just have 727 cards...what am I doing wrong?

I followed the link provided for the beta and downloaded everything there and installed Forge...do I need to unzip the zip files into a particular folder?

    Thanks for any help.

  16. Hi Terrain try emailing the maker directly at mtgrares@yahoo.com. I didnt count the cards listed in cards.txt myself I just assumed the number listed was correct. :D

  19. Been using the planeswalker constructed decks. Is there a bug on their abilities? It's supposed to be activated only as a sorcery, but I can activate it as an instant as well.

  20. Ian yes...it is a known malfunction (see the readme :))

  21. Hm...hopefully there is 849 cards. I just downloaded the zip file to check it.

Hopefully the AI handles the new spells and creature pumps OK. (It won't handle them worse than it usually does.)

I'll post my card picture of tortuga, for completists.
